Review of All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) by Kim B — 17 Jul 2012
For once, the movie actually sticks pretty close to the source material and does a good job of telling it. Of course, the movie has nothing on the book though bc the book is one of the best books ever written and just so emotionally compelling and depressing.
It def is one of the better films of it's era n u can tell that right away. The battle scenes have special effects and look good and the black n white works well to show the lifelessness of war. Sometimes though it was confusing to tell people apart bc of it being in black n white n jumping around ppl.
Also, compared nowadays to some anti-war movies like deer hunter or saving private Ryan this is very mild as far as brutality, suspenseful music, emotional scenes, or graphic imagery. To be fair it's hard to compare the two though bc this was made so long ago and was the first of these anti war movies to come around.
Being that it's effective without all the extra things we have today, show this is a good movie and will stand the test of time.
