Review of All About Steve (2009) by Rabab M — 14 Apr 2014
I thought it was okay. Stuck between 2 and 1/2 stars and 3. It was cute, for what it was. A cheesy romantic comedy about an unbelievably odd woman who follows a one-time-date across the country because she believes he is "the one". No matter how weird you are, eventually you'd get the hint that someone doesn't want you around but Mary (Bullock) just doesn't get it up until about 10 minutes before the movie ends. It's believable in the sense that there are people who are extremely odd, like Mary. Everyone's a little weird in some respect, but Mary ranges from believably weird at times, to fairly extreme and unbelievable. Would anyone, no matter how odd, REALLY make a crossword puzzle FOR THEIR JOB with every clue related to a guy that she KNOWS no one else knows? Her character is touted as smart by the other characters in the film... but sometimes she comes across as a total dipstick who should be visited by the men in white coats.
It got kinda lame for me when she fell into the mine because I didn't expect that that was where and how the movie was going to end. It almost felt like they had done all this fairly amusing stuff with Mary and then suddenly decided, "Oh snap! This isn't really going anywhere. How the heck are we gonna end this movie? Wait, I got an idea!" When I get that feeling from movies (or even books) that brings down the star count. I like Bradley Cooper, I think he's really handsome. I also wish there was more D.J. Qualls because I've kinda liked him ever since I saw him in "The New Guy".
