Review of All About Eve (1950) by Anthony D — 18 Sep 2008
I don't know why, but for some reason I can't love this film. It could be that I'm never in a good mood when I see it, could be overhype, but it always falls short for me. The performances are great, the 2 lead actresses especially, and their characters memorable and beautifully developed, but it took me about an hour to tell the 2 male leads apart.
And Eve always came across as a shallow character. Yes, there's wit and charm, but it's sandwiched inbetween so much bloody dialogue (as good as it may be) that I found it hard to pay attention (again, might've been my mood) and missed a lot of it.
And I still find the ending to be a little forced. In short: Sunset Boulevard was robbed!
