Review of All About Eve (1950) by Lauren H — 30 Oct 2010
Another weird movie from the 50s that's darker and more psychologically twisted than anything mainstream cinema comes out with today. Too talky at times, and the middle lags a bit, but it's still an interesting story that manages to remain so despite a cast of some really unlikable characters. With the exception of Marilyn Monroe, of course, who once again is just plain adorable in her brief cameo. Shame she's not around anymore.
Not really sure what to say about this one. I keep getting taken off guard by just how bizarre they used to make them back in the day, and much more intelligent, it seems. It's a good film with something to say about the human condition, which is rare for films. It stills feels very much like a play at times, though, with long scenes of talking that should have been edited down.
I did enjoy the acting, though, especially from the titular "Eve" character whose actions in this film totally threw me for a loop. And what a sexy voice. And the fact that it's ultimately a criticism of celebrity and the entertainment industry as a whole was a nice touch.
In the end, I don't know. It's certainly a good film, I'm just not sure I could recommend it as the storytelling style is somewhat outdated. I certainly enjoyed it, and, who knows, you might too.
