Review of All About Eve (1950) by Gabi B — 05 Jun 2011
A phenomenal movie: screenplay, cast, cinematography. As Bernard F. Dick wrote "Bette Davis wasn't playing Margo Channing in All About Eve, she w.a.s Margo Channing". As she was not only one to be briliantly cast. Anne Baxter, George Sanders, Celeste Holm, Thelma Ritter and even little role of Marilyn Monroe were outstanding. They all made this bitchy game of intrigues so believable and such a sophisticated screenplay come alive.
Actually it felt very feminan movie as most of the time it was about women, about being an icon, about youth and getting old, as women had control on what was going on. And differently as the straight-forward characters of men they created colorful, unpredictable, complicated and complex characters when non of them actually being heroines.
And after all it not only fascinate me with screenplay and performances but also made me most sincerely laugh almost through all the movie.
