Review of Alive (1993) by Jiana W — 07 Jul 2011
I saw the documentary about this incident about 2 years ago. A rugby team on the way to a match crashes in the Andes Mountains. After many days of being out in the freezing weather and enduring minimal food, they resort to eating the frozen bodies of their dead companions. After about 70 days, three of the remaining 16 survivors-- nearly starved to death, weak, with no gear-- hike across the mountains to get help in neighboring Chile. Their story is unbelievable but a testament to human will and endurance.
This movie features some hokey, oftentimes bad acting from nearly everyone save Ethan Hawke, who plays it low-key for the most part. It's a fair attempt at a reenactment of this crazy, sad, and inspiring event but I say watch the documentary instead.
