Review of Alita: Battle Angel (2019) by Muldjord — 12 Mar 2019
The Alita character is captivating. The effects are so good that the real humans sometimes seem more off than Alita herself. But it's only in the scenes where they put a human head on the CGI bodies. And it's not badly done at all, it just has that uncanny valley feeling when they mix it. But it's a tiny complaint when that's all I can come up with.
I absolutely loved this movie! Crossing my fingers for the very obviously set up sequel.
The style of the world they built reminded me at times of Blade Runner, but only as dark still shots. The pace of the world is a lot faster in Alita - when it needs to be.
You really root for Alita - she's a character you feel for. I think most people can relate to her in some way. Feeling excited but lost at the same time. It's an interesting take on the "I forgot everything about my past" trope. And I love that they feed it to the viewer in bits. Not just her remembering who she is. Also literally her physical appearance throughout the movie. It was like playing a video game where you upgrade your skills and items - but as a movie. Worked well if you ask me.
