The "translation" of a Japanese manga to a big screen action movie feels like Robert Rodriguez tried too much to make it as an awkward anime, while not much an original idea. But, as one who saw the 1993 anime, I think the movie is tons better and actually has a point.
Maybe that's why the anime wasn't that popular to begin with. As for a strong protagonist, props to Rosa Salazar for an unique, memorable, fun and amazing character. Will definitely watch again.
