The trouble Ripley has found this time is exponentially bigger and scarier than anything she encountered in Ridley Scott's memorably minimalist, eerily elegant 1979 film. There is always an interesting tension in Cameron's work between masculine and feminine qualities.

When it finally hits the fan here, we're in for the mother of all battles also it's a flaming, flashing, crashing, crackling blow-'em-up show that keeps you popping from your seat despite your better instincts and the basically conventional scare tactics.

The special effects are amazing and the atmosphere is truly gritty and brilliantly suspenseful, thanks to the hard work of the production team, who should be proud. Sigourney Weaver is again brilliant and is a great role model for female action stars but adding the mother heart to the film, also containing one great one-liner, this is better than the first, a rare in the movie industry but is famous for that fact.

You can watch this without seeing the first but it would make sense if you did. James Cameron has once again produced another masterpiece and is one of the best directors around, it's a shame he hasn't done a lot but puts a lot of patients into his films.

A near modern classic and up there with the best, if not for the genre.
