A very big improvement over the first one, if you ask me. Of course they're really two very different types of movies with Aliens being more of an action movie while the first one veered more towards horror.
Their's still a lot of waiting around but you always know that there's a reason for it. The story in that way is much better paced in that regard. Alas when things do get going it's pretty frantic and I would say much better than the 1979 movie.
