Review of Alien Resurrection (1997) by Scott M — 31 Jan 2015

Instead of telling a good suspense story like the previous 3 (each with varying levels of success), this film instead focuses on the fetishization of the Alien in only a way that a pretentious French director can do.

Jeunet decides to focus more on human-xenomorph hybrids and disgusting effects with a complete disregard for character or story, both of which are terrible. There is no suspense in this movie, which is what the Alien movies are about.

I have no interest in gross, gory horror, and the reason the first two films (and to a lesser extent, Alien 3) work for me is because they are horror films based on true suspense and tension, and not just gross kills of undeveloped characters.

Also, I think the Ripley basketball scene in this movie might be one of the dumbest scenes ever committed to celluloid.
