Review of Alien Resurrection (1997) by John P — 14 May 2017
Wow who knew that Joss Whedon, who made the Avengers a box sucess, use to write the script for this film. I guess you got to have your start somewhere. From what I heard, this sequel was made because of the fan response because nobody liked the last and supposed Alien 3 movie.
So they made this flick to try to end it on a stronger note and satisfy their nerdy needs but is was Hollywood's way of saying, "Hey! You think that's a bad way to end a franchise? Well take a look and see how else we can fuck it up even more.
" Throw in the director from Amelie and you get a film that sucks out the dignity of Alien creatures that look a lot cornier than Alf. The movie wastes no time for resurrecting Sigourney Weaver and it only took 200 years for that to work out.
Winona Ryder's acting in this made me feel very annoyed and that is mostly because every scene she's in looks like a 5-year-old who's ready to have a temper tantrum. Brad Dourif is one creepy bastard as well when he interacts and tests the Aliens in a bizarre make out session.
This movie crowbars these characters into making you feel like you care but in reality they are just plain boring and chew just as much scenery as the Aliens. There are also pointless CG shots that felt like they were not needed at all.
The ending is a bit of an obvious cliche as well when the 'new' Alien boards the last ship, has a quick tussle with everyone, and (of course) dies from being sucked out into the vacuum of space.
Overall the story has a million holes, the characters are just there to die, and mixing Ripley's DNA with the Aliens is interesting but it doesn't add much. This movie is bargin bin material like the last Alien movie.
Don't bother unless you want to waste five bucks on something.
