Review of Alien Resurrection (1997) by Hunter P — 04 Feb 2018
A boring and disappointing conclusion to the Sigourney Weaver era of Alien movies unless Neill Blomkamp's Alien 5 finally makes it to the big screen as the canonical continuation of the franchise. Alien Resurrection has a few cool moments and not just in the action sequences.
I liked the basketball scene which apparently was actually done by Weaver and not just putting the ball on a wire. The special effects are still good. Yet Resurrection is still just boring. I think I nearly fell asleep.
Yet when it comes to watching movies, I'm defiant to the very end. This movie probably has one of the worst cases of loophole abuse I've seen. The ending of the last movie was because Weaver didn't want to be playing Ripley nonstop.
So, what does the studio who is highly dependent on their franchises for money do? Have her play a clone of Ripley, not the genuine article. And it's set 200 years after Alien 3 to make sure it's confirmed that it's a clone.
Weaver's not Ellen Ripley, she's a clone. Got that? The special edition, which is NOT the director's cut, also comes off as insulting in its own way. Mainly because you're flipped off constantly about the happy ending override of Alien 3.
You know, Newt's death? It's NOT a spoiler, what the hell are you talking about? Ripley, the PROTAGONIST, also feels...secondary to the plot. It focuses more on a space crew, mainly from Winona Ryder's point of view, rather than Ellen's clone.
It feels like two movies at once and it can't concentrate because some idiots butchered Joss Whedon's script. Alien Resurrection may not be the worst science-fiction film to exist but it sadly serves as a forgettable sci-fi action movie that we may very well pretend never existed.
