Review of Alien Resurrection (1997) by Liamexe — 18 Jan 2023
No doubt, Jeunet was incorrect for this movie. Delicatessen and "The City of Lost Children" demonstrate that he possesses the aesthetic, the darkness, the claustrophobia, and the sci-fi experience; what he lacks is a genuine gift for dread.
Even at their most scary, his movies don't have the same terrifying quality as the "Alien" movies. Additionally, he has an odd, sinister sense of humour that clashes awkwardly with the Alien tale.
I'm not sure if the convoluted plot, which is this movie's biggest flaw, was written by Joss Whedon, who can create good scripts when he wants to, or if Jeunet rewrote it to fit his more baroque style, but in either case, a recognised talent made a mistake.
