Review of Alien: Covenant (2017) by Aaron M — 23 Jun 2017
Rather than developing the storyline where we left off with Prometheus, Dr. Shaw setting out for the Engineers home planet with the benevolent android David, the writers have decided to completely abandon that narrative for a generic monster movie with all of the predictable bells and whistles that can be expected of an horror sci-fi movie.
Perhaps this was a desperate move by Fox executives to convince people to actually leave their homes and see this movie at the theatre by catering to the throng of morons who relish the same tired formula.
And then as an after thought, trickling in the ultimate fate of Dr. Shaw and turning the plot into a PSA about the dangers of AI. This wouldn't have been such a bad direction to take the film if it wasen't for the horrid writing, both character and plot development were essentially non-existent.
Despite the climax of droid vs droid and the uptime question the movie poses about the consequences of humans playing god and the consequences of technology. I found this movie incredibly boring and uninspired.
A complete under utilization of of Billy Crudups character who is just plain annoying and Danny Firsts character who maybe has 6 lines in the entire movie. I actually liked Prometheus, a lot of people gave the movie shit because it wasen't alien, but I liked that it was different, I wanted to know more about the engineers and why they created humans and why they wished to destroy them despite the fact the answers are somewhat obvious.
There is no doubt Michael Fassbender is the focal point of this movie and he does a great job but it's not enough to save it.
