Review of Alien: Covenant (2017) by Rox22 — 18 May 2017
In a nutshell this movie is all bark and little bite. The buildup is great, but payoff is just *meh* at best. Characters are barely developed, aside from Fassbender's characters which are done rather well.
The movie seems to not know what it wants to be: a horror? A Sci-Fi action? Philosophical drama? It's this mishmash that ultimately makes it stutter and never get momentum. It's connection to Prometheus is sloppily done and it feels like a huge section of story is missing.
The writing in general feels like a highlight reel from all previous movies in the franchise giving it an inconsistent feel. Effects and cinematography were outstanding. Overall: Alien Covenant just feels out of place and seems too eager to harvest the best aspects of all the movies before it.
But this mixture coupled with little character development and a choppy narritive make the movie feel like a disappointment. AC isn't a bad movie, just a disappointing one.
