Review of Alien: Covenant (2017) by Andrew M — 17 Jan 2018
The main problem with this movie lies with its predecessor Prometheus, and arguably the main problem with Prometheus is Covenant. Both movies are great in their own surroundings, but despite a few character threads they lack marriage.
What questions Prometheus started were in no less clarified as they were continued in Covenant. However, to solely base either film off the other would be overly harsh. Covenant feels very much like an alien film, with the scares and gore, only hightened by what the 21st century can offer visually.
Ridley Scott skilfully uses breathtaking scenes to capture a dark and unsettling film with a twist - that was semi-entertaining - and fan lore to expand the collection. The lead Daniels thankfully felt more Sigourney than Shaw, add to a cast of strong female survivors.
The stark focus on the android characterisation was both aggravating and vastly interesting. In a story that was hard to find empathy but fascinating to watch Covenant receives 3.8-4/5.
