Review of Alien: Covenant (2017) by Allan R — 15 Aug 2017
I've been intrigued by the tepid response this movie has received from fans. As such, I went into this film with low expectations. That instinct turned out to be unfounded.
I feared Alien: Covenant would simply provide a modern, CGI spin on on the same story already told in 'Alien' and its progeny. Specifically, colonists fight to survive against an advanced and foreign alien onslaught. The battle of attrition leads to square off between the hero and the alien. The hero wins.
This film certainly touches upon that theme but involves deeper issues which are growing more pertinent in contemporary society. Specifically, concepts of creation in the face of rapidly improving technology in both artificial intelligence and, all be it to a lesser degree, genetic engineering. In this sense, the xenomorphs in Alien: Covenant are more or less a supplement to a greater evil.
Alien: Covenant has reinvigorated a series which could have descended myriad of formulaic creature features.
