Review of Alien: Covenant (2017) by Miles N — 18 May 2017
After a very slow start, the film briefly picks up only to lapse back into the origin of the Alien species. Unfortunately, there is nothing interesting in this story line: Not only is their origin irrelevant for the purposes of a good thriller, it's particularly uninspired and trying to make the movie more cerebral than it is.
The unknown is almost always scarier as it leaves your imagination to fill it in with what scares you (Halloween stopped being scary once Michael's backstory was mined). The action/horror sequences seem like Scott was going through the motions so he could keep telling the origin portion, with none of the tension of the original or excitement of the first sequel.
Most disappointing are the paper thin characters who have no depth and exist only to be eaten. The laziness of the "surprise" ending is almost offensive as it's given away 15 minutes before the big reveal: Did Scott really not think the massive hints he dropped would go unnoticed? If so, it clearly demonstrates how limited he considers the intelligence of his audience.
