Review of Alien: Covenant (2017) by Aubrey F — 21 May 2017
The problem with the alien franchise is that the first 2 installments were all but perfection. So the impossible goal to surpass those are not feasible. The best you could hope for is to match them.
This movie does not match them. But to add to that, it does come close. It lacks the true dark confined intensity the first one did, and lacked the overwhelming sense of constraint and imprisonment the second did, but with how movies are today, they are not made that way anymore. It is a true lost art of tapping into the true fear centers. This movie though does scratch the surface. It was a better story that answers many questions from Prometheus and tying in the alien storyline, though very subtle.
It does raise a few questions, but I believe the direction they are going with this is a positive direction.
All in all, this movie was a solid film worth the alien title and far underappreciated already by the people who just want brainless movies that tell them everything and not want to think about the movie and what-ifs.
