Review of Alien: Covenant (2017) by Tom Z — 01 Sep 2017
While trying to return to form, Alien Covenant is held back by relying too much on Prometheus. While the setup seemed to be delivering a new yet familiar take on the alien universe we quickly make an abrupt turn and dive head first into all of the philosophy that plagued Prometheus's storytelling.
For the first hour and a half the alien wasn't scary and the action wasn't interesting which is a real shame when the name of the film is named after these creatures. This failed to capture the fear of the first movie or the intensity of the second.
The best part of the movie was the last 20 minutes when we finally get back to form, people in dark cramped spaces hunting and being hunted by the alien. If you liked Prometheus you'll like this one but for everyone else give it a pass.
SPOILERS. It seems the Ridley Scott or some on the writing team really likes David has a character because he's back and up to some more twisted things. This is where the movie loses focus in my eyes.
I don't understand why they couldn't just have the same story but cut out everything with David. Why does David need to be this puppet master. Why can the story simply be they try to colonize this planet but the aliens live there and they must escape before the aliens kill the colony? Someone really likes David but it really isn't me.
At least David was a character though, many of the characters in the movie were very forgettable and die solely to keep up the pace. The crew the twice the size of the crew from the first alien movie so we get less character development for each one.
Not that it seemed to matter by the pace in which they where killed off. Like I mentioned before the best part of the movie is when the alien gets on the ship and it was sort of this cat and mouse type feel.
This just made me Sad we couldn't have more of this instead of David making goo goo eyes at the baby aliens and talked about creation.
