Review of Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974) by Alvin Y — 01 Jan 2012
Alice doesn't Live Here Anymore, Great Movies.
Martin Scorsese is as you know, one of my favorite filmmakers of all time. His films are all brilliant and astounding. Here is somewhat refer to as Scorsese's first chick-flick. It isn't that much of a girl's movie, it's only a study of the gender of the feminine and it's strengths and weaknesses to get into that goal that the character dreams of.
First of all, this was released back in 1974, and it's still I think one of the most realistic and poignant story I've ever learnt. The Alice character is not some fictional person, it's a dedication to all mothers out there who may had a husband passed, and had a son or daughter trying to raise in own, and also independent. I can see Alice's point of view, she's very sad, emotional, we only see her smiling all the way at the last scene of the film. Most women today suffers like this one, especially they're also poor and jobless and uneducated, but nevertheless, is a true believer and a strong woman willing to do everything. Look at Alice, she works as a waitress, she takes care of her son, she meets other dudes may or may not be nice, and she wants to be a singer, from the first time we meet her at the beginning as a kid. Ellen Burstyn, won an Oscar for her role here, she's really great in portraying not just a woman with hope, but also a woman with such purity and spirit.
The other casts as well did a great job even if it's just a little bit scene with Alice. Scorsese's direction is really straightforward without any other scenery shot to see and explore the place they're into. The soundtrack is just beautiful, not some other made up songs by some artists out there. What else could I say, it's really a good character study, besides, it's really something that I can consider as well a masterpiece.
Then, there's some other films like *Unmarried Woman* and *3 Women*, that are also portrayals of women in reality. And that's how Hollywood should always make some films. And Scorsese still makes some great movies even to this day. And I can assume the title means, Alice is trying to start a new life with a good career, good life, good place, and a better future and present. It's truly a great movie.
