Review of Ali (2001) by Jennifer L — 24 Jan 2010
You've probably seen a lot of boxing movies, and countless more sports movies in general, but I'd still recommend Ali. It's got more of a biopic feel to it. That might make you think that it's a lot like Raging Bull, but it's not. It's much more enjoyable.
We can always trust Michale Mann for great cinematography, and Ali is no exception. Complimenting his use of visuals is lots and lots of great music. Music of every genre and timbre infuse the scenes in Ali with good vibes.
What really matters though is Will Smith's portrayal of Muhammad Ali. We've seen him play the same, cocky black person in lots of movies, but when he plays an actual cocky black person, it's totally different. He changes how he talks, how he carries himself, his facial expressions. It really is a strong performance, worthy of recognition. And Smith's Ali is much more likable than DeNiro's LaMotta.
Besides, I kind of got a little tired of following the story of Raging Bull. As well made as that movie was, it was tiring. Ali is much more succinct and interesting. It draws you in and keeps you engaged.
