Review of Ali (2001) by Rocknblues 8 — 20 Jan 2010
Ali is a decent Biopic that never really takes off because it's bloated and sort of hollow. It's obvious that Mann was a big Ali fan, but good editing is a big part in what makes a really good film and Mann never balances out his fanboy feelings with smart film making. The movie clocks in at 158 minutes, but the movie actually only covers the 1964-1974 period.
The cast does a good job and you will get the typical Mann visuals, but it's not really enough to lift the film above average. The Hollowness that plagued Mann throughout the decade is one of the most disappointing things since you know that Mann is a passionate director.
