Review of Alexander (1996) by Dave L — 08 Jul 2012
Watching this film, one can see the blood, sweat and tears that director Oliver Stone poured into this work. The fact that the movie is a gigantic mess is a sad point. Wow, this could have been good but the movie just isn't.
First off, Colin Farrell is very miscast. He does not carry a performance that requires the complexity of a ruler who is pan-religious, pan-sexual, but still a tyrant. A man who inspires tens of thousands of people to follow him to the ends of the earth (according to their view) and the personality that would require.
Outside of that, the movie annoyingly jumps around in time while attempting to explain Alexander's current personality by how he grew up and what he witnessed. This fails also because Alexander still feels so cold and distant to us.
We basically learn little to nothing about him and why he did what he did. This is the epitome of a spectacular fail.
