Review of Alex Cross (2012) by Keith P — 17 Feb 2013
I really wanted to like this movie. I really enjoy the Patterson novels, so I thought I could overlook the casting choice for Alex Cross. Tyler Perry is not an actor who has enough emotional range to play a role this complex. Casting him in a role played by Morgan Freeman... are you kidding me? I even tried overlooking that but the changes to the character and his life as we know it was astounding. I saw no reason for this film to be set in a different city than the novels and the fact that they altered the character's family life (avoiding spoilers hopefully) in an attempt to create emotion is a cheap ploy that could have worked if they had cast a better leading man.
I feel bad for Matthew Fox as he did an excellent job even though given little character development.
In all, a pathetic attempt to reboot a franchise. Neither Writer, director, producers, or even Patterson for allowing this to pass as a depiction of his character should be allowed to make another film.
