Review of Aladdin (2019) by Megawargreymon — 28 May 2019
So what can I say about this movie.... It's a fan edit of Aladdin for 2019. Let's start with the character. First Will Smith I am calling him Will Smith because that's what he is. He is as charismatic as usual but he is not playing a character he is playing himself. Aladdin is blend and lacks the personality of his cartoon counterpart, not a lot to say about this one. Jafar is miscast. He is not menacing or sleazy he is just there because someone had to be. Iago is waster. And Jasmine is no longer looking for true love she wants to be in charge. The song numbers are ok for what this movie is. In general the movie is a major let down. Aladdin is not the hero of his own story he is a side character. The movie is about Jasmine and her "rise to power". I say that because her motivations are changed to apparently reflect current year (2019). If they wanted to make a movie about her that's fine but why not go with a new take on it instead of changing the story. It worked for Maleficent why not do a movie called Jasmine and just run with it.
TLTR: If you are nostalgic for Aladdin just revisit the 1992 Disney classic.
