Review of Akeelah and the Bee (2006) by Deb S — 31 Jul 2010
Akeelah and the Bee is about a little girl from a poor school that starts winning spelling bees. She gets inspiration from several people in her community and learns many valuable lessons.
The underlying message behind this movie is that when parents are involved in their child's education in a positive manner, then said child will be more likely to succeed. Akeelah's mother was giving her a hard time about the bee. Then she realized how important it was to her daughter. When she offered support instead of flack, Akeelah did much better. Even kids from poor schools can prosper if encouraged by parents. They are a vital part of education.
Throughout the whole movie I was waiting for Laurence Fishburne to offer Akeelah a red pill.
