Review of Akeelah and the Bee (2006) by Eric B — 08 Feb 2008
If you have ever seen the Spelling Bee on ESPN, you know how boring it is. Don't expect anything much better. I am also sick of "inner city" ghetto/racially charged movies depicting kids overcoming things by doing intelligent or inspirational things.
It's almost as if this is a huge accomplishment BECAUSE she is black. To me I find it degrading, implying that this is a surprise that a black person could do something great. People can accomplish many things, it doesn't matter what color their skin is.
This movie was full of too many racial stereotypes and should have focused less on what color her skin was and more of what these kids do.
