Review of Akeelah and the Bee (2006) by David F — 24 Jan 2010
Well done, feel-good family film that follows an 11 year old spelling whiz from her underperforming middle school in South Central L. A. to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. Very much an 'underdog beats all odds' formula in the same vein as 'The Karate Kid' and 'Rocky', but just as satisfying.
Child star Parker is very appealing as is Laurence Fishburne as her mentor - only a few minor contrivances involving Akeelah's mother, making for some needless overdrama, detract from the story a bit.
