Review of Ajami (2009) by Alan W — 20 Jun 2010
I always find gauging acting in subtitled films to be a bit difficult. One is never quite sure how the dialogue feels unless one fully understands the language. Not that I am complaining about the acting here.
But in the end, for me, it is the writing and the structure of the film that impress me most and which I find most enjoyable and satisfying. Playing with a slightly fractured time-line and in chapter form, it makes a very interesting watch in an efforts to show both sides of the conflict between the Arab and Jewish communities as well as between middle and lower classes.
The film draws you in slowly but once it is in, and parts of it can be a tad soapy, but as mentioned earlier, it is a rewarding journey that it takes you through and 2 hours flew by.
