Here is a case where reading the novel, an exciting fast-paced, multi-threaded story by Alex Haley, made the movie enjoyable. Burt Lancaster is always worth the price of admission, and Helen Hayes as Ada Quonsett provided the laughs in a movie that wouldn't be considered politically correct today.
