Review of Airport (1970) by Andreas O — 03 Jun 2011
One of the movies that launched the disaster film era of the 70s, Airport is an interesting piece, really. The movie is all about building up to the incident, which doesn't happen until over an hour an a half into the story, introducing characters and subplots and eventually having them converge.
This differs from the usual disaster drill of getting the incident out of the way quickly so the movie can focus on the disorder and the characters trying to survive. Thus, Airport has quite a unique feel.
If anything, the ending is a bit flat. You would have wanted that one last deterioration before the resolution. Still, it's an enjoyable movie. Helen Hayes' character is absolutely great.
