Review of Airplane! (1980) by Kevin R — 11 Sep 2012
Picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue.
A former military pilot is afraid to fly and will not seek employment opportunities that would allow him to fly again. During a flight where his ex-girlfriend is a stewardess, the entire flight crew comes down with an illness. Will the former pilot take control of the plane and land them safely or will he fail like he did as a military pilot and let everyone down?
"Cream?".
"No thank you. I take it black like my men.".
Jim Abrahams (Ruthless People and Hot Shots 1 & 2), David Zucker (Ruthless People, Naked Gun 1 & 2, and Scary Movie 3 & 4), and Jerry Zucker (Ruthless People, Rat Race, and Ghost) collaborate to deliver Airplane! The storyline for this picture is interesting and fairly entertaining. The comedic content is inconsistent, unpredictable, but definitely funny in parts. The cast delivers solid performances for the genre and includes Lloyd Bridges, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Peter Graves, Leslie Nielson, Julie Hagerty, Lorna Patterson, and Robert Stack.
"Have you ever been to a Turkish prison?".
Airplane was a film that I had never watched all the way through so I DVR'd this picture and its sequel. I did find the film fairly entertaining and well written. The comedic content was inconsistent, like most parodies, but I still enjoyed the film and definitely found it worth watching all the way through. I personally wouldn't add this film to my DVD collection but I can understand why some people feel this is an all time classic.
"Have you ever seen a grown man naked?".
Grade: B.
