Review of Air Guitar Nation (2006) by Noah S — 29 Aug 2007
Holy mother of Christ, this show rocks! I read about it before viewing it, picked it up as something silly to catch, and in the end, dare I say it... I actually gained a modicum of respect for them!
The ultimate of poser competitions, this movie chronicles the birth of air guitar competitions in USA, in the hopes that they can send a representative over for the World Air Guitar championships (yes, they DO exist). While it starts off sounding and looking like a really bad joke, and at times it's hard to see if the documentary is making fun of them or taking them seriously, it does give them a fitting tribute. It's strangely patriotic at times, and the complete earnestness and devotion of Dan Crane gives the film a good emotional feel to it, which would have fallen into Ha-Ha land in the wriggling hands of C. Diddy.
This show gives humour in unexpected doses, and I guarantee that you would have a gut-bustingly good time with it (and most of the humour is not slapstick, believe it or not). The tone is great, settling for a fluid combination of light-heartedness and pure rock, and I should have mentioned this earlier, but the performances are... rocking. No other words suffice.
A moment of Zen for you:
"To Err is Human, to Air Guitar... Divine".
Et tu, Alexander?
