Review of A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001) by Nick C — 03 Jan 2011
Needy robot boy with fixation on Pinnochio's Blue Fairy gets himself into a pickle over becoming human. Jude Law--playing robotic gigolo with personality wholly consistent with real life self-absorbed narcissism--fails to help robot boy. Kubrick gets the blame.
Thought provoking film about mankind's responsibility in creating artificial emotional intelligence, ie advancements in AI is all well and good but at some point do we have an obligation to properly nurture this intelligence? Interesting stuff and the film does a good job of exploring this theme. However, the drift towards a sentimental conclusion in the last 15 or so minutes ruins much of the hard work completed in the previous 2 hours. A shame, as there are touches of brilliance.
