Review of A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001) by Shane D — 14 Nov 2011
This is an amazing film. Sure, it runs long. Yes, it is like watching three different films. But its a glorious, overblown, flight of fancy not matched by many of its peers. Haley Joel Osment is amazing as David and years since his star has faded, you still can't help but recognise his ability to convey innocence and emotion.
The first third of the film is creepy and beautifully paced, then we get what is probably an unnecessary middle section that does contain a brilliant turn from Jude Law but is ultimately what makes the film feel more like a marathon.
The final third of the film is where you find some greatness. The blue angel scene at the end is one of my favourite scenes of all time and the addition of aliens is both equal parts batty and sublime.
Really worth sitting through.
