Review of Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972) by Eric T — 13 Apr 2008
The Wrath of God is a combination of brilliant cinematic devices and excruciating bad editing. Herzog just seems so enamored by the Peruvian Jungle that Wrath occassionally feels more like someone's photo album from a tropical vacation then a movie. Klaus Kinski's performance is creepy but frustratingly one-diamentional. Infact, there's very little about any of the character's here that suggests multi-diamentionality. The film is far more concerned with plot then character...not always a draw-back, but the editing is sloppy. The Wrath of God ends up feeling like a 2 and a half hour movie, even at 100 minutes playing time.
The Wrath of God is able to subtly get across it's messages of power and greed, although it's been done more effectively...and German speaking Spanish Conquistador's is a tad bit irritating.
