Review of Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972) by Scott P — 14 Jan 2009
Aguirre, the Wrath of God is not entertainment, but an experience. The plot is very minimal. The script is good, but this is a visual story. If you're not familiar with filmmaker Werner Herzog than understand he pushes his actors and crew to the most extreme conditions that the film depicts. Aguirre feels very authentic and realistic because of Herzog's vision.
The film is about Don Lope de Aguirre and his team in search for El Dorado during the 1500s, but his quest for gold and power destroys him. The cinematography is amazing. I'll point out its not about the best shot, but how to capture the surroundings without hiding anything. There are no camera tricks in Aguirre which is why its so convincing. Again, this film maybe boring to some, but you have to know this is an experience. Aguirre should be required viewing to those interested in filmmaking. Its the best dirt-low-budget film I've seen, especially for 1972!
