Review of Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972) by Jacob N — 30 Apr 2010
Werner Herzog's masterpiece; his meta-cinematic and semi-documentarian style make for a thoroughly unhinged, breathtaking plunge from reason (in which one can't help but conjure the phrase "art imitates life").
Kinski's presence saturates throughout, proving himself among the most durable actors (or madmen?) of all time. Includes some of the most incredible and troubling imagery ever captured on film. As such, there can be little wonder as to its immense influence (particularly on Coppola's "Apocalypse Now").
An incredible landmark in world cinema.
