Review of Agora (2009) by Chris M — 03 Jul 2010
The movie is an interesting attempt at fusing ancient historical (accurate?) drama with a quasi-biography, discussion of manhood vs. womanhood and some scientific interpolations in between. Unfortunately this "jack of multiple genres" ends up being the master of none.
Rachel Weisz's scientific discussions with self seem out of place amongst the rest of the action and plot. While good detail was made to set design and costuming, the action that transpires pales in comparison to recent films set in the same time period. There also is not much in strong development in the relationships between the characters (Minghella and Weisz have potential, but interact only a few times).
Interestingly, this is a movie that could have afforded even a further half hour to at least iron out the story and all the conflicting forces to make for a more complete movie.
