Review of Agora (2009) by Niek S — 19 Jun 2010
A movie I wanted to have liked, but didn't. The time & place in which this story is set is promising - about 400 AD, as the edges of a crumbling Roman empire, where powers are shifting - but the film does not manage to properly convey the complications.
It's partly a tragic love story, which is told without much conviction, partly a treatment on the scientific discoveries of how our solar system works - in a tone that presumes the viewer's a retard. Also, the mobs are a bit too much like those in Monty Pyhton's The Holy Grail, which does not add to the film's credibility.
This is all very negative, and the film isn't really that bad, it's just a case where the director fails to translate good intentions and an interesting premise into good cinema.
