Review of Agora (2009) by Ray T — 18 Jul 2010
A beautiful lavish production of the life of historical 4th century Hypatia of Alexandria. Since little is known of her life except that she was a knowledgeable mathematician, the story is mostly fiction.
The movie fails in its anachronistic language and characterizations of Pagans, Christians and Jews and their tensions. Also, an assertion is made that Hypatia theorized the heliocentric nature of the solar system and the elliptical orbit of planets - something that is not even suggested in any historical document.
The King James version of the Bible is even referenced and quoted in this dramatization. And the music score is bombastic, cloying and arranged with all the nuance of a sledgehammer.
