Review of Agora (2009) by Jon G — 26 Jul 2010
Interesting, faithful historical piece about Hypatia of Alexandria. The film's first part gets oddly dull during the destruction of the pagan Serapeum. (The film recovers by promising us that the next strife will be between the Christians and Jews).
One omission from the record is that Bishop Cyril was known for his scholarship (being one of the Church Fathers). Instead, Cyril is shown solely as a ruthless inquisitor, in his quest to vanquish Orestes. Weisz as Hypatia is a delight as always.
