Review of Agora (2009) by Larry Q — 21 Aug 2010
Absolutely fantastic film - just shy of 5 stars (for no special reason other than one or two somewhat wooden minor actors).
Lots of protagonists and antagonists - pagans vs. christians, christians vs. jews, religion vs. science...
Rachel Weisz is wonderful as Hypatia - a wonderful, nuanced performance as the voice of sanity throughout the film until the end when the voice of sanity can no longer be heard.
This film really highlights the tendency of religions throughout the ages to totally lack tolerance for the views of others and, in most cases, their tendency to solve issues through violence and wars; rather than the purported religious views of tolerance and forgiveness.
This film really highlights the relevance and evolution of science throughout the ages.
A film well worth seeking out.
