Review of Agora (2009) by Tiago M — 09 Oct 2010
Sword and sandals with brains? Amenábar who directed the excellent â??The Othersâ?? brings us a historical drama of ideas. Contemporary debates over religious extremism and scientific rationalism are covered in this fictionalisation of events surrounding the sacking of the library at Alexandria.
As well as recreating the city with impressive realism and scale, it develops a compelling sense of volatility and impending violence. The development of emnity is more absorbing than its explosion and the story does start to wander. But the filmâ??s portrayal of how religious fervour can interrupt the progress of secular knowledge is spot on.
