Review of Agora (2009) by Dickie L — 17 Nov 2010
Historical epics aren't my favourite cup of cinema, especially when they tackle religion. Agora proves no exception. So mind numbly dreary was it that I almost fell asleep in the chiropractic death trap that is the Rosebud cinema seating.
No mean feat. The usually exemplary Amenabar desperately mixes in some unrequited love with the overblown battle scenes, religious debates and conjectures on science. Its an impressive cast and there are some nice aerial shots, but this is leaden, laborious and and oh so long.
