Review of Agora (2009) by Stanley C — 18 Jan 2011
Agora is an excellent historical film about the legendary Library at Alexandria. The film chronicles the destruction of the great Library, as the tide of Christianity floods the city amid great destruction, murder, betrayal, and devotion.
Rachel Weisz is wonderful as the philosopher and teacher, Hyaptia, who strives to save the Library and carry on the sciences amid religious fervor. Davus is her former slave who is conflicted between wanting his freedom and Christianity, and his love for his master.
The film is excellent in showing the conflict between the Pagan religion versus Christianity and the Jews, and sadly shows how religious wars destroy the true "wonders" of the world when people are divided.
An excellent and touching film!
