Review of Agora (2009) by Michael K — 08 Mar 2011
The fictionalising of the burning of the library of Alexandria provides the backdrop to this ambitious but flawed swords and sandals epic. Rachel Weisz is cast as Hypatia, the female Greek philosopher, and she does okay although the role has more weight than she can match up to unfortunately.
There are lots of metaphors and gentle discussion points around creation and religious fundamentalism. What is missing though is both philosophical and emotional punch which is a shame because this could have been a fascinating film.
In the end though it was the cgi rendered Alexandria which really brings the whole thing to life and gives you that feeling of epicness which the script sadly doesn't.
