Review of Agora (2009) by Gerald P — 27 Mar 2011
Agora is a nice although much softened depiction of Hypatia of Alexandria in the late Roman Empire. Although the movie is engaging it fails to properly depict the real cruelty and unethical behavior of the christian church.
In reality The character of Rachel Weisz was flayed i.e. had her skin stripped off her body while alive with pottery shards and was subsequently burnt alive without her skin and then dismembered and her remains were dragged around and displayed on the city streets.
The movie is compelling for the humanist and the rationalist but fails to engage a non academically inclined audience in emotional engagement. All in all thoroughly enjoyable for the history aficionados but is too mild to be a realistic representation of the actual events.
